Player goes to garbage and Sharp looses a customer for life. Called Sharp.wants to charge for repairs. Player had horrible start-up time and thus went unused. Tried to use it recently and it simply doesn't work.
Then in late 2008, for some unknown reason, every new BlueRay disk I attempt to play resulted in an "incompatible disk" error within 20 seconds of inserting it. I'm attempting to push the issue with them again to see if they will address the problem.
Given the lack of support Sharp has provided I'd recommend NOT purchasing any Sharp products. The player works if you wish to play standard DVD, but I didn't need an expensive new player for standard DVDs.My recommendation: DON'T buy this Sharp DVD Player - even if someone gives it to you, return it.
I'm not the type of person to post negative comments however; for the money this player is a piece of crap. I contacted Sharpe 3 months ago with no success.
If you do, good luck. I bought it in early 2008 on Amazon (no issue with Amazon)., it worked less than average for 10 months.
I've tried many tricks to get it to play, but with no luck.
At the end of the process, the player was supposed to restart, but it went into a infinite loop of restarting and shutting down.I contacted Sharp support and was told I would have to send the product in with a $50 minimum charge for trouble-shooting (.). I was fairly pleased with the player until I tried to play a new Blu Ray DVD and it would not play. The support agent told me he would send me the info on where I was to send the unit to my email, but he never did.I'm off to buy "Brand X" now to replace it--I purchased the Sharp player along with a Sharp flat screen since they were supposed to work seamlessly together, but I guess I will remember this incident when I go to replace the TV down the road. The player is 18 months old. The player informnd me that formats change from time to time and that I must update the firmware to watch the movie. I went online and downloaded the update and installed it per the directions.
I was told there would be a new update "any day now". When I bought my Shap Aquos BDHP20U about a year ago, I was very happy with it. The newer Sharp blu-ray players (2 of them) have new updates every 2 months but it has been 7 months and there still has been no update for this player. That was 4 months ago and there still has not been a new update. After about 5 months I rented Hancock in Blu-Ray and after a short time reading the disc, it ejected it with a message saying, "Incompatable Disc" I went to the Sharp website looking for the latest software update but the latest one was the one I already had. After 2 months the same thing happened with another blu-ray rental and I called Sharp to tell them about it.
Today, I received another letter telling me they needed to talk to me. The Sharp BluRay player number sharp aquos bp-hp-20U is nothing I would recommend. Sharp agreed to repair on the warranty, and promptly repaired and returned the unit.
I understand that is a reasonable policy, but if I had made my initial purchase at a local big box store, I could have walked in with receipt and player and flat out exchanged it. I'm not sure if Sharp is just making this hard and complicated, but in my reality, time is money. For this much aggravation, I should have just thrown it away. If they don't receive it within 2 weeks, they will charge me full price.
Well the drawer stopped opening about 2 months after that. They can't provide the tracking number, but they want me to return their defect within 2 weeks while it is taking them nearly a month. Within 7 months of purchase the disk drive would not read the disc. When I called, they asked if I'd received the replacement, which I have not.
I've been told the replacement was shipped, later asked for a credit card number and told that the replacement couldn't be shipped without my credit card info, then told it was shipped. So far so good, you think. In my experience of trying to get this either repaired or replaced, I've now spent 5 hours on the phone with various staff.
